SEO for Starters



The content of this article as the name suggest(SEO for starters) is suited for the ones who are new to Search Engine Optimization. For those who are already familiar with the SEO concepts, this article may be a refresher.
I will start from the very scratch because i see many beginners finding a tough time to start off with their website ranking in the internet.

SEARCH ENGINE BOTS (Google bot, Yahoo bot, Bing bot etc.) 

Search Engine bots are the automated robots which crawl the websites and index them in the respective search engine. For eg: Google being the most popular and advanced search engine has a very sophisticated system of Google bots which work 24/7 crawling each and every pages of millions of website on the internet and index them in the Google directory.
So i think its pretty much clear that our goal is to allow the Google bot crawl our websites and index it in the Google directory.

Organic and Sponsored search result  

Organic search results are the actual results of pages that went through competing millions of pages on the internet when the user makes a search query. Whereas Sponsored search are the paid search result through Google Adwords. The top shaded pages are the sponsored links while the below pages the organic search result.
Note: Search engine optimization affects only the organic search not the sponsored search results.


  


SEO Practice

 

1. Use Title Tag

The page title tells both the search engine and the user what the page is about. In the user search query, the content in the title tag is shown at the top(the first line) below which comes the description.Words in the title are bolded if they appear in the user search query which gives user an idea what your page is like and if it is worth to click or not.

Some Recommendations for title tags:


  • <title> tag should be placed within the <head> tag of the HTML page.
  • Choose a title tag that tells something about the page.                                                                            1. Don't use titles that has no relation with page contents.                                                                    2.Avoid using dubious titles like "Untitled" or "New Page1"      
  • Use unique title tags for each of your pages in your website. Don't use single titles for every page.  This will let search engine know that every page on your website is different from others.
  • Make your title short and brief but informative also. 
    • Don't use lengthy titles, Google will show only a portion of it.

2. Use Description Meta Tag

Meta tags are the tags for Search engine. Use description meta tag to summarize what your page is about. Description meta tag is a summary for your page and should be about a sentence or two long or a short paragraph.

Here a sample description meta tag with syntax:

Some recommendation for description meta tag:

  • Write a description that would tempt user to click on your website. Write about the most relevant points of your page in the description. It should inform the user about your page and must interest him to click on it.
  • Avoid using description that has no relation with your web page.
  • Don't use dubious descriptions like "This is my website" etc..
  • Don't copy paste description from the content of your webpage. Give some time to it, its worth the effort.
  • Use Unique description for each of your page. Don't use single description everywhere.                                
 
3.Use Keyword Meta Tag
 
The keyword meta tag is an important aspect of SEO.The keywords are the words that the user will write in the search engine to display the results. Suppose if you write a page about "How to play the d-chord in Guitar" , you should set the keywords something like : "how to play d-chord,how to play guitar,guitar,d-chord"  (without quotes)
The keywords are written as : keyword1,keyword2,keyword3....  (separated by commas)

A sample keyword meta tag is shown below with the syntax:



P.S - Both Description and Keyword Meta tags is also written within the <head> tag


NOTE : SEO is now easy with keyword researcher, its a software that allows you to find long tail low competition keywords. Low competition keywords implies higher ranking in search engines.
